How to use a dyne pen to compare film surface tension
Dyne pen, also called a corona test pen or plastic film surface tension test pen, measures the film's corona treatment level in dynes and assesses the effectiveness of corona treatment.
Original Sherman corona test pens imported from the United Kingdom are available in more than ten tension grades, including 38, 40, 42, 48, 50 and 52 or higher. They determine whether a plastic film's surface tension meets the value marked on the pen, helping users assess suitability for printing, lamination or vacuum metallization, control quality and reduce losses caused by unsuitable material.

Lower-range dyne pens draw straight lines more easily and require less pressure. Grades 40, 42 and 44 require a little more pressure while drawing.
1. On properly corona-treated film, a line that spreads evenly without forming beads indicates that the surface tension is equal to or above the value marked on the Sherman dyne pen.
2. On insufficiently corona-treated film, a line that slowly contracts indicates that the surface tension is below the value marked on the Sherman dyne pen.
3. On untreated film, a line that immediately contracts and forms beads indicates that the surface tension is far below the value marked on the pen.
